Shringeri Sharadamba Temple
Located on the holy banks of the Tunga River, Shringeri is a true seat of Vedic wisdom. It is here that Sri Adi Shankaracharya consecrated a temple to the Goddess Sharadamba. Sri Sharadamba Devi currently resides here, installed as a Golden Murti that radiates blessing for the highest knowledge. Sri Adi Shankaracharya was said to have lived here worshipping the Goddess, Sharada Devi, for twelve years. This historic site is also the place where Sri Adi Shankaracharya established his first of four Vedic peethams across India; Shringeri is the South Vedic peetham, known as the Dakshinamnaya Peetham.
The temple to Lord Shiva at Murudeshwar features an aesthetic grandeur to match its historical and spiritual magnificence. Situated on the coast of the Arabian Sea, this temple is the holy place where Lord Shiva’s Atma Lingam was rescued from Ravana by Lord Ganesha. The murti enshrined here is the Atma lingam of the Lord. It should also be noted that this temple also features the world’s second largest statue of Lord Shiva and one of the largest Raja Gopurams in the world, towering at over 230ft.
Udupi Krishna Temple
This famous shrine of Lord Krishna at Udupi is also located on the coast of West Karnataka. The sacred place of worship is an important pilgrimage for devotees of the Lord, and as such, it is at times referred to as the Mathura of the South. It is also the birthplace of of the great Vaishnavite saint and the founder of the dvaita vedanta philosophy, Sri Madhvacharya. The great Madhvacharya established this temple to Bala Krishna, the Lord as a child, by installing a powerful saligrama-stone murti that was believed to have been created for Rukmini, the wife of Lord Krishna, by Viswakarma, the architect of the universe.
